Your Safety Cascade

We use multiple safeguards to reduce the risk that your messages and selected Life Story chapters are delivered at the wrong time. No automated delivery system can eliminate that risk entirely.

Stage 1: Gentle Reminder

When your check-in is due, we send a friendly push notification and in-app alert. One tap and you're good.

Stage 2: Reaching Out

After a roughly 2-hour grace period, we reach out by email and, when enabled on an eligible plan and available in your country, SMS*. The email carries a link that opens LastFlare so you can check in.

Stage 3: Guardians

After about 6 hours, we reach out to your guardians to check on you. They can report that you are safe, that they cannot reach you, or that you have passed away.

Stage 4: Final Chance

After guardian verification completes or its response window ends, eligible paths get a final email and roughly 12 hours before sharing may begin. On the normal cascade path, use the link and confirm to cancel during this grace period.

Message & Chapter Delivery

Guardian confirmation moves eligible content into the final warning period — and if you've enabled automatic delivery with current consent, that can also happen after the guardian response window ends without enough confirmations. Cases routed to manual review follow the same route: an operator's authorization begins that final warning period — never an immediate send — and a current stop request on file still blocks it.

Preventing false delivery is our north star. Cascade stages are logged, and the normal automated path gives you repeated opportunities to cancel before delivery begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nothing happens right away. Our multi-step safety verification gives you multiple chances to confirm you're okay through push and email and guardian verification. A guardian threshold or valid automatic-delivery consent can move eligible content into a final warning period; otherwise the case goes to operator review. You can also set a vacation/pause mode for planned absences.

LastFlare uses AES-256-GCM encryption to protect your messages at rest. Encryption and decryption happen on our servers — we hold the key and are transparent about this in our privacy policy. We cannot share your content with third parties without a valid legal order, and we will notify you if legally permitted to do so.

Data export is available in the app. If discontinuation is within our reasonable control, we intend to give as much notice as reasonably practicable and use commercially reasonable efforts to complete active cascades or notify affected users. Abrupt legal, security, insolvency, infrastructure, or third-party events may prevent completion or advance notice.

Not at all. Many people use check-in apps simply for peace of mind while traveling, hiking, or living alone. Legacy mode is about thoughtfully preparing messages for your loved ones for the future. Think of it as a time capsule with a safety net.

Tap the link in the reminder email — it opens the LastFlare app directly to the check-in screen. If the app isn't installed yet, the link guides you to download it first.

If you keep checking in, the verification cascade does not start and your active messages and selected Life Story chapters stay stored. If you miss a check-in, LastFlare uses reminders and guardian checks. Eligible content may be released when your guardian threshold is met or, if it is not met, through automatic delivery with current consent or operator review. Available cancellation controls can stop unsent content but cannot recall anything already delivered.
